Introduction

The release by Adobe of the Adobe distributable player solution allows you to target the latest Flash Lite 3.1 player with your applications.

Implementing the upgrade

Download the Flash Lite 3.1 player from here.

Start up PCSuite and connect your S60 device and synchronise with phone.

Now install the file "distributableplayer_flashlite_s60_en.sis" on the phone.

Security FlashLite problem

See the Security sandbox issue in Flash Lite may prevent network access.

This problem does not apply to applications running with the Flash Lite 3.1 Distributable Player.

Testing

To test this new solution download and install these applications from Nespresso or Atlantic Records.

See the article Nestle’s Nespresso launches Flash Lite mobile app and the file is available for direct loading to a selected mobile phone at http://flashlite.nespresso.com/

Get the Atlantic Records application here

This application is unsigned and uses secure networking, you should configure your device properly.

You should download these applications using your devices web browser.

Creating a new Flash Lite 3.1 application

Just simply updating your Shock Wave Flash to Flash Lite 3.1 file from Flash 6 using Adobe CS4 by adding the CS4 update and Device Central upgrade and creating a new (.swf) from the original (.fla) WONT run with distributable player, the (.swf) must be packaged as described below.

The (.swf) must be packaged as a (.sis) file. The Adobe Mobile packager is downloaded creates an installable Adobe/Symbian file. This will call the Adobe Version Checker and the Adobe distributable player.

  • There is a problem installing on Windows Vista has been resolved by installing the Sun Java runtime for Vista must be installed first, but this probably has been installed already.
  • Looking at the Chapter 2 of download manual. The note on the front says not for Windows Vista. This problem has been resolved as above.
  • Now download a specific version of S60 3.0 SDK. When the question of the type of kit required select "Compact", after 30 days you may need to register the kit with Forum Nokia, which is free of charge. Please dont install plugins or upgrades to this kit as the Adobe Packager uses the basic S60 SDK kit. Uncompress the kit and right click setup.exe and "Run as Administrator".
  • Run the Adobe Mobile Packager and ignore the three Download boxes on the right as the links for Active Perl and Symbian S60 SDK are wrong, always refer to Chapter 2 of the download manual.
  • Click "Create New Package", ignore the error message about "Windows Mobile", if you want to get rid of this follow instructions on Chapter 2 for Windows Mobile Cab installation.

Fill in the boxes and build the (.sis). Use a an empty directory for the output for the self signed (.sis) file. If you dont supply icons they are added automatically by default.

Then transfer to your Nokia E61 and see the Flash lite 3.1 SWF run as an application.

Summary

There is no official support from Nokia and the Ovi store would not support this application because this uses Adobe signed not Symbian Signed. See the Legal Status below.

The Adobe distributable player solution is really useful as this allows older phones to access web sites which use Flash 9

Previous versions

There is previous version Flash Lite 2.1 available at Flash Lite 2.1
