From Forum Nokia Wiki

The Instant Messaging and Presence Service (IMPS) is an instant messaging standard initiated by Wireless Village Forum (now part of the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA)) which is primarily supported by Ericsson, Nokia and Motorola. The purpose of this standardization is to bring and to have one single instant messaging system regardless the media and the client. This client is not only designed for PC but also for normal handset.

Yes, maybe some of you are already familiar with Agile Messenger or IM+, IM clients in Symbian and Pocket PC handset. Agile Messenger and IM+ (or Gaim and Trillian in PC version) can act as a client for YM, MSN, Gtalk, and AOL but actually inside Agile Messenger and IM+, there are separate client exist to connect to each IM server.

Nokia has the application as "My Presence" while Sony Ericsson has it as "My friends"

Two famous free IMPS servers is Yamigo and Smartvas.
