KIJ000839 - Verisign signed MIDlets cannot be installed to Series 40 5th Edition, Feature Pack 1 devices

From Forum Nokia Wiki

ID KIJ000839 Creation date March 4, 2008
Platform Series 40 5th Edition, Feature Pack 1
Devices
Category Java Sub-Category Signing and Certification

Description

MIDlets signed with the VeriSign code signing certificate cannot be installed to Series 40 5th Edition devices. The reason for this is in how the OCSP (Online Certificate Status Protocol) is implemented on these phone. The response from VeriSign does not have the intermediate certificate which the AMS expects.

How to reproduce

1. Create a MIDlet.

2. Sign it with the VeriSign certificate.

3. Try to install the MIDlet by downloading it from a server or use, for example, the PC Suite Application Installer.

When downloading and installing the MIDlet, the "no valid certificate" error is displayed.

If the Application Installer is used, the MIDlet is installed on the phone, but the MIDlet cannot be launched.

Forum Nokia Wiki has a test MIDlet with VeriSign signature.

Solution

This problem is fixed and will be delivered to the phones in newer firmware versions of Series 40 5th Edition. The exact version of the fixed firmware will vary from phone to phone and the introduction of that firmware depends on the firmware release schedule for the specific device.
