EKA2, a Real-Time Kernel, is the second-generation kernel for Symbian OS. EKA2 is the only kernel version supported by Symbian from Symbian OS v9.1 onwards. A real-time Symbian kernel EKA2 is suitable for telephony stacks, multimedia, Games, VoIP. EKA2 (Epoc Kernel Architecture 2) kernel architecture provides:
- Support for real-time applications
- Improved hardware adaptation
- Foundation for Platform Security
Symbian OS and EKA2 are modular. EKA2 is multi-tasking enabled. It switches CPU time between multiple threads, giving the user of the mobile phone the impression that multiple applications are running at the same time.
